About Finton and our editorial standards
Finton: Surviving the Collapse is a free browser survival game made by Mondsegel Games, an independent studio. You keep one family alive on one suburban street for twenty days through one of four emergencies. This site also publishes The Finton Journal, the Field Manual and Case Studies. This page explains why, and how we decide what goes in them.
Why a game publishes preparedness articles
The game is built on real preparedness problems: water that stops when the pumps lose power, food that spoils without a fridge, cold that saps strength, money that stops working. The articles exist so the decisions you make in the game rest on the same facts that official agencies give households. We want both halves to be useful on their own: the articles to someone who has never played, and the game to someone who has never read a word of preparedness advice.
Editorial standards
- Official and primary sources first. Safety and health guidance comes from government agencies such as FEMA and Ready.gov, the CDC, the USDA and their counterparts abroad. Historical figures come from primary or institutional sources such as central banks, the World Bank and peer-reviewed or standard academic references. Every article lists and links its sources so you can check them.
- Numbers are checked against the source, not paraphrased from memory. When a source states a figure, we use the figure it states.
- The game is kept separate from the advice. Each article ends with a section headed “How this plays in Finton”, labelled as game mechanics, not real-world advice. Those sections describe how the game actually works, checked against the game’s code. Where the game simplifies reality, we say so.
- Time-sensitive articles are revisited. When events move on, we update the article, say what changed, and show an “Updated” date. We only show an update date for substantive changes, not for design or navigation tweaks.
- No invented experts. Articles are published under Mondsegel Games, not under a made-up author or credential. Articles are researched and drafted with the help of AI tools, and every factual claim is checked against the cited source before publication.
- No fearmongering. We report what governments and historians actually say, without predicting crises they are not predicting.
What this site is not
Nothing here is medical, legal or financial advice, and none of it replaces official instructions from your local emergency managers. In an emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number. Finton itself is a work of fiction: the town, its people and its events are invented.
