Tab 2: When the shelves empty
TAB 2 Finton Field Manual
▶ PLAY FINTON FREEDo this first
- Keep a few days, then two weeks, of shelf-stable food you already eat, and a manual can opener.
- When the power goes out, keep the fridge and freezer shut. A closed fridge holds about 4 hours; a full freezer about 48, a half-full one about 24.
- Eat in order: fridge first, then freezer, then the pantry.
- When in doubt, throw it out.
In Finton
- FoodMart and the stores close in the first days. Buy cans and dry goods before the collapse.
- Fresh food spoils: raw meat in about a day, cooked meat in about two, greens in about four. Cold weather and a powered fridge slow it.
- Smoke meat into jerky at the fire pit or stove; it keeps for weeks.
- Hunt, fish, forage, trade with neighbors and plant the garden. A harvest halves the food you need to store for the FOOD need.
Know the numbers
- Two weeks for a family of four = 56 meals in Finton.
- Fridge: about 4 hours closed. Freezer: about 48 hours full, 24 half-full.
